I’ve been noticing this more and more lately, as people are claiming that you cannot dispute legitimate debts with the credit bureaus as this is considered fraud. Yes, they are claiming it is a criminal offense!

Now time after time, myself and others have posted information that proves this is false. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives consumers the explicit right to dispute ANY tradeline on their credit report, even if the consumer knows the listing is legitimate.
So why do you feel that people continue to post such misinformation?
No, I don’t think thats it Dr. Deth. These people are usually very clear that they feel disputing legit debts is fraud, and I’ve seen many suggest you can go to jail for it.

Because the credit industry thinks that they are better than the American people and are trying to put false information out so that the average American will not fight them..the credit bureaus wants people to think that they are some government agency not the billion dollar a year private industry that they are.

They think they are the morality police.
And I know you have heard the old saying that if enough people tell the same lie often enough other people will start to believe it.
Great question by the way I wonder the same thing.

well, why SHOULD anyone EXPECT to have LEGITIMATE debts erased?
That’s probably more what the protester are implying. Disputing is one thing, expecting to have legitimate debts just thrown away by the creditors is another thing entirely.

It’s just a myth from amateurs on this board….There are many myths…one of the big ones is that creditors must accept any small amount you send them (like $5 a month) and stop collection activity.
I think that the root of the problem lies with the “credit repair” firms that have come into existence. They simply do a bunch of debt validation requests in the hope that one or more items can’t be validated, so by law they must be removed. I’m guessing that multiple debt validation requests all at once puts some sort of internal trigger on an account, so that they reject all validation requests as “frivolous.”

Disputing a legitimate debt is NOT fraud.
It simply means you are using your head.
You can go on living accepting anything they
say as true?
